DEFIANTLY ADORABLE

Being a first-time Mommy, one of the things I’ve always made a conscious effort in is to not use the word “no” so often around Jayvon.

You know, cos I’ve heard that the first word most kids say is the word, “no” which is at once negative and irritating! So Nic & I really try. We r-e-a-l-l-y did!

And if you were in earshot of Jayvon as he learnt how to speak, he was such an endearing baby, always saying “Yes!” to any question may throw at him.

Even medicine time was a breeze with this obliging boy!

So I can’t really pinpoint when it really happened. Maybe it is the fact he in entering into that infamous “Terrible Two” stage. But sometime just a few months back, he picked up a new phrase in replacement of his usual “Yes”.

And no, it isn’t “No”…

I am thankful for that at least.

But… it’s worse than “No”…

He now says “NO NEED!”

An outright “no” is annoying, and outright defiant.

His “no need”, while no less defiant, is adorable enough to elicit giggles and laughter from people around. People who find this little pint-sized boy uttering such a phrase totally amusing. People who encourage and in turn, cement this behaviour. People other than Mommy and Daddy, that is.

So our usual banter goes like this…

“Jayvon, go and bathe.”

“No need.”

“Jay…. Go and bathe!”

“No need.”

“Go. And. Bathe. Now.”

“No neeeeeed….”

Then comes my stern stare to say “I mean business and when I say ‘go and bathe,’ you jolly well get into that bathroom mister before I….

And then, he will happily saunter along to the bathroom.

“It’s dinner time. Come and eat.” “No need.”

“Keep your jigsaw puzzles.” “No need.”

“Bedtime now!” “No need.”

“Do you want to use the potty?” “No need.”

I’m sure you get the idea… Haha!

Oh, but there are exceptions to the rule? When the command contains key words like “MacDonald’s,” “ice cream,” “biscuit,” “cookie,” or “chocolate,” it is almost a given that it will be carried out with a grin and a dance to his step.

Happy SITS Day! Ahh, you have to love toddlerhood! Our two year old has learned the words, "Mommy now". "No need" is way cuter.

Very adorable. Our little guy is still too young to talk, but he does make noise like he has something to say.

Happy SITS day!

He is such a cutie! And I am sorry I know it must annoy you guys so much for that to be his signature phrase, but it is to those that don't hear it every 2 minutes sooo stinkin cute!

But look at it this way...there is so much worse that he could be saying!

Visiting from SITS - I too, have a two year old (2 1/2). It is the most trying time so far! Now mine is at saying "I don't want to" to everything. Which elicits the same stern "I mean business" look from me! LOL

Oh man, how cute!! I love that phrase, it sounds so polite, yet it's defiant...polite defiance! My kiddo has always done stuff like this, using much more adult phrasing than one would expect, and it always makes other encourage her, even when she's being defiant!

I have to admit, I'd giggle too if I heard that, but I'd make sure to turn away/leave the room so as NOT to cement that, because I know how frustrating that is :)

I love it! "No Need"? That's great. I have a two year old son too and he very politely will say, "No thanks". Then "NO THANKS!". Stubborness seems to run in two year old boys!

Visiting from SITS... Happy SITS day!

Hello! Stopping in from SITS. Yes, it would be hard to get upset when he says that. Too funny! What an adorable boy you have.

"No" is sooo direct and boring but "no need" is perfection, I know you don't want to hear it but if I heard that in person I would be a fit of giggles myself. ;)

Wow, not only does he know what he doesn't want, he is developing negotiation and rationalization skills at a scarily early age! The fact that you now have to discuss "need" with him regarding a bath is simply spectacular, and probably exhausting. Take an extra long nap; me thinks the upcoming "why" stage is gonna be extra challenging for you...

I'm sure this is just a phase-Of course it doesn't help that people encourage that behavior >.<
Hopefully he'll get of this 'No need' and move onto more positive, life affirming phrases like....'Yay!' Lol
