A hair-raising issue

One interesting article I read in the last few days is that of a certain mother, whose 12-year-old son had his hair cut by his school teacher an hour before his PSLE Oral examinations. He was upset and crying, which made the mother mad and fuming – and she made a police report and complained to the Ministry of Education.

As a mother myself, as I read the report, I find myself wondering if I’d ever react as she did to such a perceived slight, or in the mother’s own words in the Straits Times report, “She (The teacher) showed me no respect by not telling me that she was going to cut his hair beforehand.”

When I was in an all-girls’ secondary school, the kids I hung out with wore our pinafores a certain way, stringing our belts in every other loop except the waist loop. We wore the funkiest sports shoes that white would allow. I even colored my hair numerous times, despite my teachers’ constant threats that she would cut it off. Of course I wide-eyedly told her since I am like 25% Peranakan, I can’t help it if my hair was so naturally a little off-black. Hey, I even remember when I collected my GCE “O” Level certificate (or maybe it was the “A” Level cert, my memory faileth me), my discipline mistress sternly warned us to come back to school dressed properly or risk not being able to collect the cert! Of course with time, the school has wised up and looking at the school girls in my old alumni – and their belts are now permanently sewed in placed with monogrammed socks, and looking altogether, well, uniform. I am sure there will be some who manage to somehow circumvent any sort of school rule. There always is, isn’t there?

Back to the student whose hair was cut off, I think the school has its case, but probably should have handled this with a tad more caution. To cut the boy’s hair short is one thing – I personally feel if warnings have been given and the boy refused to accede, then sure thing. Call the parent, inform them to either bring him to the salon that same day, cut the hair if they so agree. But perhaps the school ill-chose the time to dole out the punishment – and opted to cut his hair an hour before an important exam. But I do feel the school has the right to stand by its stated rules and regulations.

The mother? A tad over-reacted in my opinion. Some might feel a little more than a tad. Because to make a police report on this? Huh??? She could have gone to the principal for an explanation, and yet she chose to jump a couple of levels of authority to the police and the MOE. Minors involved in most crimes or court cases would have their identities protected by law, to prevent them from being singled out. Yet, this mother gave such explicit details of her son’s name, the name of the school in concern, and heck… even gave some before-and-after mug shots of her son. Hmm. He has achieved quite a status and well, I am not sure I would want to subject my son to such scrutiny.student From the Straits Time article as at 25 August morning, these are the number of social media “shares” this story has garnered.

So back to my original question… as a mother myself, would I find myself responding in similar manner? Well, I honestly don’t think so. I am a pretty non-confrontational person by nature, though if someone hurts my babies and makes them cry I might turn around to hiss at them. But then again, I guess the hubby will be around to always moderate my feelings and actions. Haha!

Counting my blessings

Having one kid was rough and tough, and when we decided to have the second, we anticipated the toughness and the roughness…

The sleepless nights, the wallet strains, the mucus-wiping and butt-cleaning. The fatigue, the body aches (oh wait, that might be just the age), and did I mention the mucus-wiping and the butt-cleaning? Oh, I did? Yes, and the mummy-nesia that seals the whole deal.

But nothing really prepares us for this.

IMG_5851

Two sleepy smiles that greet us each morning.

Peals of shared laughter over ice-cream and biscuits.

Matching clothes.

Long strolls on the beach, hand in hand, enjoying the breeze.

Watching back-to-back episodes of Dinosaur Train on the telly.

Makes up for my cutbacks in shopping (sob!) and overseas travels (double sob!)… but hey, when we see the two kiddos together, it kinda makes it all worthwhile.

IMG_5865

Seeing my two boys interact make me roll me eyes and roll on the floor in laughter alternatively. No one ever said motherhood was good for one’s mental health. Haha!

IMG_5901

And so I am counting my blessings today.

Two huge ones, to be exact. Healthy, happy, chatty, endearing.

Thank you, God.

I love it whenever Jay randomly, in the middle of doing something else, looks up, looks at me and goes, “I love you, Mummy.” Like totally unsolicited. My jaw kinda drops, my heart stops a second, and I smile back, “I love you too, baby!” I used to have to squeeeeeze those “I love yous” out of him like nobody’s business. And now he doles it out when I least expect it. Of course, doing so gets him a “free pass” whenever he does something naughty. Which for a 4-year-old is about… everyday. Oh, and when Xav gets in on this trick, I expect some fun times ahead.

Singles may think hearing those three magical words from that special someone is the be-all-and-end-all. Wait till you become a parent.

And of course now the question on everyone’s mind is… “So when’s your number 3 coming?”

Linking up with…

Now, where did the year go?!

I remember 2010 well. The year I was pregnant. The year I had so much fun with Jay. The year of loads of work (though that’s hardly new).

But 2011?

I must have entered some kind of alternate universe. Cos I distinctly remember giving birth. And seeing Xavier. And then before I know it…

IMG_5387

He’s already 8 months?

EIGHT MONTHS?

I mean, I can’t even call him a baby. He’s more like a toddler. He doesn’t fancy crawling, preferring instead to wiggle and flip his way to the object of his desire, or flashing those huge peepers of his at the nearest available victim to carry him to what he wants.

IMG_5394

He still adores his older brother, giving the shy smile every time Jayvon comes near, and breaking out into adorable peals of laughter at his brother’s antics (which are a-plenty!).

IMG_5386

Xavier also enjoys *trying* to stand on his own two feet, and shuffling excitedly, so I see some walking in his near future. Haha! He also tries to “talk” to us, pursing his lips, and making funny baby noises, so we also foresee some yakking in the future!

With Jayvon, I think the constant sleep deprivation (waking up every two or three hours for 18 months does this) made me LIVE each day and FEEL each day that much more. And the fact that Xavier is a poster-baby by the very fact he was sleeping through the night before he turned five weeks old (from 8.30 p.m. to morning!) probably allowed me time-off.

IMG_5402

What an awesome privilege it is to his Mummy. And I thank God everyday for this precious gift!

While 2011 has slipped past me thus far, I hope to enjoy 2012 more! Hahaha!

Blast from the past – Wafer biscuits!

We had dinner at one of our Wild About Wings, which is always a hit with us. (Psst, their fish & chips is to die for!) But after dinner, seeing that X had already fallen asleep, we decided to take a stroll down the beach. And we came across this little gem. A blast from our past.

IMG_4528

Look familiar?

Those of us who grew up going for fun fairs will remember this – thin, colourful, crispy wafer biscuits!

IMG_4526

Here’s Jay, happily holding up his biscuit! Mummy & Daddy also had a blast with this, as we reminisced the “good old days.”

Jay even commented, “Mummy! Look it can stick to my lips!”

Haha… Like how I used to eat it waaaaay back. It’s amusing how things come full-circle, and who knows, maybe those carnival funfairs will be in vogue again and I can bring Jay on a nostalgic trip!

Doppelganger, 8 months apart

This is my good friend Jerblinn’s son. Julien who’s turning almost one year old soon. This shot was taken when he was four months old – Xav’s age now.

And this is my son, Xavier.

Do they look similar? We’ve had so many comments from common friends who think so!

I admit – I personally think they do look alike, especially those huge peepers they have! Haha!

Everything’s peachy when they come in baby-size

IMG_2534Babies are adorable. Every fart, burp, snort, gargle. When an adult-sized person does it … Eeeewwwww! Super gross! But somehow when a baby does these seemingly disgusting things… Awwwww! Super cute! Hahaha! Life’s unfair when you smell like baby powder all the time.

Everything’s just so peachy when they come in baby-sizes!

My countdown… Week 26!

26 weeks into my second pregnancy. Which means it is 14 weeks (and likely lesser) to the arrival of my second prince!

God has been very good to me (and by me, I am also including Nic. Cos a bad day for Mommy means a bad day for Daddy) in this pregnancy. Though the symptoms have been a little more uncomfortable, thankfully I can still pretty much function as I have always, and Baby is growing on time and on schedule!

Oh, and speaking of “Baby”…. He has a name now. I chose it almost a month back, but never had the chance to blog about it yet. I’ve had so many people ask me if I would start Baby #2 with a “J” as well. Honestly, I did try to start with that. At least I’d narrowed down the possibilities from the other 25 letters of the alphabet! But with so many of Jay’s friends also have names starting with J, my list grew shorter and shorter as I thought about it.

I had narrowed it down to a few “J” choices. Jaydon or Jayden … which was promptly shot down by Nic who felt it was too common. Jesse … Love this name, but in the Singapore/Asian context, it can be a too ambiguous a name. Jude … another fave of mine. But I’ve heard how some Chinese-educated people “butcher” poor Jayvon’s name, and I think Jude will be another lamb on that block.

And so it was back to the thinking cap for me. And when I say me, I mean just me. Nic cleverly took the “heavy” burden of choosing the Chinese name of Baby. Wow. Out of the three Chinese characters, one is the constant (surname), and he plans to keeps the last one constant as well. Wow. To think of that one Chinese word. Nice. Hahahaha!

If you know me, you’ll know that I have a deep love and long-running relationship with Scrabble. I mean the actual game. The ipad app Words With Friends entertains me for a while, but nothing beats sitting and playing the actual thing! And as such, I have a love for the 5 high-scoring consonants – J, K, Q, X and Z. Since Jayvon has taken up one of these, I decided Baby will also have a “high-scoring” name!

And so…. his name shall be called…. XAVIER.

Perspective is a funny thing

image

Distance can play tricks on your eyes.

You can never be very sure what is ahead.

Many may make their speculations.

And what they think how the road ahead lies.

Whether it is a good or a bad thing.

Funny how people can be naturally negative and gravitate towards that.

Time will tell.

And as we inch closer to the end, all becomes clear and the truth shall finally be revealed.

With kids, men and women migrate to Jupiter

This would be the title of my new book.

If I ever write a book, that is.

Which I hardly see happening anytime in this lifetime.

But hey, if I did, I’d probably write this one.

Unless of course, there is already a book with this title out there?l

Is there?

I wouldn’t know.

Cos I’ve not stepped into the NON-children’s section of a bookstore for, well, 3 years.

But I haven’t read any non-fiction book in ages.

Unless the Twilight series is considered?

But anyhow, seeing how I hardly read nowadays, it is little wonder I won’t be writing any book soon.

Obviously, my soon-to-be-written-once-I-get-my-butt-to-it book is a pun on that famous book.

Don’t tell me you don’t get it.

It’s either I don’t tell a pun like I used to (oh so very well, I might add).

Or you are a worse-off bookstore noob than I.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.

Obviously.

But see, once a man and a woman marries, and all that initial Mars-Venus issues are resolved, there comes Junior.

Or Juniors, for some.

And then man and woman are kidnapped migrate to a brand new land.

I bring you… Jupiter.

Where the rules are totally different.

And sleep deprivation marks your day.

A wise parent once told me,

“You never know how much you don’t need to sleep,

till you have to wake up five times a night,

and get to work early in the morning.”

There is a correlation.

Between the number of times you have to wake up in the middle of the night to a screaming/crying/hungry child.

And the number of times you press that snooze button on that alarm in the morning.

It’s almost scientific.

Sure there are times when you may get up three times in the night and yet in the morning feel totally refreshed.

But other mornings where a bad night’s sleep or an ill child hits you worse than your worst hangover.

Not that I even remember how a hangover feels like.

But sleep deprivation? That wooziness and lightheaded-ness is as close as we can get.

The iPhone 4

image

This is one of those pretty things that tug at my heart-strings.

Starhub and M1 has learnt their previous lesson well, having lost a number of their customers to Singtel, as it was the first to launch the iphone in the market previously. Now, an “early registration” is available on both Starhub and M1.

I am blackberrified. I do still kinda love my blackberry.

But pretty things rock my world. And after my iPad, I am starting to lurve Apple!

Oh, and speaking of my iPad, I am super “suaku” (read: ignoramus!), but I just bought and downloaded Plants vs Zombies. It is so fun playing it on my iPad.

image

And something about shooting down mindless zombies that resonate so with my life nowadays. Thinking how to trip them up, slow them down, take them out! I think I would love the HD version of this app, but at US$9.99 it is too expensive even for MY standards!! Nic says the iPad has become my gamePad. Haha! But I love it so. :)
